DESCRIPTION
North Yakima Conservation District used this funding to undertake restoration activities in the project area located at the mouth of the Wenas Creek and connected to the Yakima River at R.M. 122 4R. The area extends northwest through a 320-acre working cattle ranch for 7/8 of a mile. The stream had been devoid of vegetation for 50 years and was in poor condition. It had no horizontal or vertical control and the associated flood plain (100 acres) had become drained. By implementing native plant revegetation and removing fish passage barriers, instream and riparian habitat functions were restored. These actions have helped to reconnect the floodplain to the riparian areas. This project represented an opportunity for successful salmon and habitat recovery in the semiarid environment of eastern Washington. The restoration of this site now provides rearing and spawning habitat for steelhead, coho, Chinook, rainbow, cutthroat and bull trout. This project now serves as North Yakima Conservation District model to private landowners for future multi-entity salmon recovery activities.
