DESCRIPTION
Project partners implemented this removal of two gravity-fed diversion dams and the consolidation and screening of four previously unscreened irrigation diversion points to prevent fish entrainment on Wilson Creek. Irrigation diversion structures near the mouth of Wilson Creek blocked anadromous fish access to most of its 382-square mile watershed, which enters the Yakima River at RM 147. Juvenile densities below the barriers were high relative to the rest of the Yakima Subbasin (Pearsons, et.al., Yakima Species Interaction Study, WDFW 1994). The dams were migration barriers to all life history stages of anadromous fish, and their removal increased spawning and rearing habitat by roughly five miles. The riparian zone in the project area was dominated by weedy species, but this project provided fencing and riparian restoration, to allow for establishment of a productive riparian habitat. In addition, livestock crossings were established, one as a rail-car bridge and one as a rocked ford. The project served as an example of positive collaboration between private landowners, tribal biologists, the Conservation District, and other resource managers. This project was transferred from the Yakama Nation to the Kittitas County Conservation District in 2003. Although administration of the project changed, the Yakama Nation staff remained involved in the project until the completion
