DESCRIPTION
The Runacres property is located on the upper Yakima River near the town of Easton and consists of 163.57 acres of pristine intact floodplain habitat. The property contains over two miles of braided stream habitat, multiple spring brooks and two tributary confluences. In addition the property contains the largest logjam on the Yakima River, a complex and mature riparian community, and boasts a highly dynamic channel migration zone that attracts and supports high concentrations of Chinook, steelhead, cutthroat, and coho for spawning and rearing. The site is also utilized by bull trout for rearing and foraging. Recent redd and carcass distribution surveys revealed that the Runacres property boasts the highest density of spring Chinook redds in the upper Yakima River. The primary threat to the habitat is residential and or commercial development and the risk of conversion is high. Kittitas County was recently acknowledged as the second fastest growing county in Washington State. The property has good access and is only 70 miles from downtown Seattle. The Runacres property is located adjacent to Phase I protected properties owned by BPA, DNR, USFS and WDFW, and is a critical habitat link in the upper Yakima. This project is the best opportunity to acquire the largest, most complex floodplain property in the upper Yakima watershed.
