DESCRIPTION
Kittitas County Conservation District (KCCD) used this funding to address unscreened, impassable irrigation water diversions that served an inefficient irrigation system. Major tasks included the installation of a fish screen, fish passage structure, sprinkler irrigation systems, and site restoration by planting appropriate riparian tree and shrub species. The project site included a springbrook waterway known as Cabin Creek (tributary to Dry Creek) and Dry Creek, which is a tributary to the Yakima River at RM 157. From the project site downstream to a side channel of the Yakima River is rearing habitat for juvenile spring Chinook salmon and resident fish (rainbow trout). The irrigation diversion structures blocked access to approximately 1 mile of rearing habitat. The KCCD sponsored this project as part of the Yakima Tributary Access and Habitat Program (YTAHP). YTAHP was conceived by a consortium of local irrigation and conservation districts, as well as WDFW. The BPA awarded the YTAHP core team $2.2 million for FY02 to FY04. YTAHP funding provides the staff and other infrastructure necessary to address hundreds of fish screen and passage projects on tributaries in the Yakima basin. Eleven sites in Kittitas and Yakima Counties were identified as early action, including this site. The project was an exceptional opportunity to provide immediate benefits to juvenile salmonids, while taking advantage of the resources and expertise provided through the YTAHP.
