DESCRIPTION
This project provided funding to monitor an ELJ project in the Upper Entiat. The ELJ project constructed 5 Engineered Log Jams (ELJ) in the Upper Entiat River (Figures 8, and 10-15). Each ELJ structure consists of 25-50 conifer trees with and without root wads. The logs range in size from 14-36 inches in diameter and vary in length from 12-60 feet. There are 2 types of log jams: bank oriented/deflector and mid-channel/bar apex. Each structure is sited in a specific location to achieve maximum biological benefit and is largely based on a detailed USFWS geomorphic analysis (USFWS, unpublished data). ELJ designs are based on a 2010 USFWS survey of natural log jams in the White River (USFWS, 2011). This funding allowed for:
- Quarterly site visits by two staff for photo documentation
- Staff time to reduce survey data and produce drawings
- Staff visits during high glow events to monitor structures and identify downstream impacts
- Site visits with emergency responders (one year post-construction) for evaluation of any changes
