DESCRIPTION
The Cashmere Pond Off-Channel Habitat project was constructed in the summer of 2009. The site is located at RM 10.5 near Cashmere on the Wenatchee River. There was an existing 1.8-acre pond located within the floodplain. The pond was created as a result of gravel removal for the construction of Highway 2. The pond lacked an outlet so that during low flows, it trapped fish that entered the pond during high flow events. This project excavated a 200 foot inlet channel to the pond, and a 1200 foot long outlet channel from the pond to the Wenatchee River. The pond was over-excavated to provide deep-water refuge and overwintering habitat. Large wood structures were incorporated in the pond and outlet channel to provide habitat complexity. The inlet channel is actived during spring runoff flows and the outlet channel is accessible to salmonids year-round because it is fed by groundwater flows from the pond and backwater flows from the Wenatchee river.
