DESCRIPTION
This grant application seeks funding to develop a large stock native plant nursery within a portion of the MSRF project previously secured for conservation. The goal of the project is to propagate and supply native plants for riparian buffer establishment/restoration projects in the Methow Valley. The limited size of currently available native pantings results in high mortality from deer browse & seasonal drought. Use of large stock will reduce labor costs for watering and weed control. large stock plants are better suited for restoration sites and provide better habitat in less time after planting. MSRF will use 2.0 acres +/- for the nursery at our Twisp site. We will work with WDFW, BOR, BPA, and Methow Natives to establish and operate the nursery. The nursery will provide large stock plantings 3'-10' from native stock collected in the Methow basin. MSRF will operate at a cost of production basis for Council reviewed projects. Plant materials may be sourced to other projects with proceeds supporting management at the site and maintenance of the MSRF nursery as a self sustaining project. The project has been reviewed and is supported by WA Fish and Wildlife, US BOR, and the Yakima Nation, to provide a cost effective source of suitable materials for Methow Basin watershed restoration projects. The project was funded in 2010 with non-srfb/trib funding after acqusitions were completed.
