DESCRIPTION
The Twisp River Properties LLC riparian restoration project is located along the banks of the Twisp River 10 miles west of Twisp. The long term goals of this project are to improve anadromous fish habitat and water quality by providing riparian shade, increasing large woody debris potential and improving bank stabilization. An overall goal of the property restoration is to provide a seed source for future natural release of native trees and shrubs throughout riparian habitat conservation zone. The opposite bank is forested with old agricultural pastures within 25'-50' of river. One property owner is currently restoring 1000' of riparian habitat approximately 1/4 mile up river.
The riverbank is composed of a mix of native and non-native vegetation. The existing buffer is composed of a mixed cottonwood forest approximately 25'-50' wide. The planting area is composed of mostly native and non-native grasses with intermittent ponderosa pine planted 15 years ago. The addition of native trees and shrubs supports the existing forest, and encourages seed dispersal throughout the riparian buffer. Subsequent to the initital planting, and to continue the riparian buffer and add to the vertical structure along the river, a strip of aspen and cottonwood was installed in 2010 south of the original planting area. In addition to the 2 original pods, multiple trees were caged individually. Mulch has been applied seasonally, and mowing has assisted in keeping weed growth down. Drip irrigation was used during July and August periodically to water plants individually, but has now been phased out as the plants no longer need that additional supplement. Pod one had its perimeter fence removed in 2013, as the shrubs and trees within are established and no longer require deer protection. Plants on the site exhibited an 86% survival rate.
