The Silver Side Channel is located within the Methow River floodplain (RM 35) between the towns of Carlton and Twisp, Washington. The side channel is a groundwater-fed spring that receives seasonal flood flows and backwater from the Methow River. The geomorphology of the side channel was defined by the mainstem Methow River in 1954. The subsequent construction of a levee at the upstream end and incision in the mainstem reduced the occurrence of channel forming events in the side channel. The side channel reflected the geomorphology left by the main river and is oversized for its current base flow. It was overly wide and shallow, lacked habitat complexity and was impacted by wildlife and livestock herbivory and anthropogenic uses. This project enhanced a 0.40-mile long reach. The project reconfigured the channel to increase sinuosity, decrease width, increase variability and maximum depths, create pools, and create off-channel open-water areas (hemimarsh) to maintain waterfowl habitat. Increased sinuosity lengthened the channel to 0.47 miles, with 41 pools and 56 wood structures created. Wood structures included log jams and single pieces partially buried in the channel to prevent wood from leaving the channel during backwatering. Roughly 0.4 acres of off-channel hemimarsh was created. Riparian and wetland planting covered approximately 2.5 acres, with newly-created wetland areas densely planted and previously existing riparian areas more sparsely planted. In total, the site received 675 shrubs and trees of 15 riparian species, 22,400 plugs of 8 wetland species, and 317 sedge mats (3.2’x16.2’) of 5 wetland species. Two large exclosures (with public access) and numerous individual cages were used to protect new plants from browse. Vegetation success has been excellent on the project, and a number of individual cages have already been removed and re-placed on natural recruits to provide even more benefit to riparian vegetation. Through a partnership with WDFW, CCFEG has been able to do low-level fish response monitoring at this project site. WDFW crews have electrofished the Silver Side Channel once each fall and spring, for three visits pre-construction and 5 visits post-construction. Increased abundance of chinook and coho were immediately documented post-construction (see document on survey results included in the attachments). Increased abundance of steelhead has also been documented in the fall months of the last two years of survey. Eastern brook trout continue to be present in the site, despite removal of this invasive species during electrofishing, however abundance of this species is markedly lower than native species. Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag arrays placed in the channel before and after construction also document use by listed species, and further indicate some level of use of the hemimarsh habitat by salmonids. Summer daytime and winter nighttime snorkeling surveys have also found active chinook and steelhead use of the new channel and hemimarsh (see chinook photos included in attachment). Finally, coho have used created riffles for spawning over several years since construction. With WDFW ownership, the Silver Side Channel provides an opportunity for public access to a successful riparian and stream restoration project with active use by ESA-listed salmonids and other native wildlife. Future adaptive management considerations for this project include the potential to place more wood structures in created pools to enhance instream cover and structure for fish. CCFEG will continue to monitor the project site and propose additional small adaptive-management projects as needed to ensure that this project remains successful into the future.
