MSRF used this grant to acquire a Conservation Easement (held by Methow Conservancy) on ~22 acres of riparian and wetland habitat from a 33.5 acre parcel, in the Twisp River watershed, to facilitate restoration and rehabilitation of riparian, wetland and in-stream habitat areas. The property includes about 2,300-ft of Twisp River frontage and the lower 960-ft (both sides) of Poorman Creek. The CE acquisition secures the protection objectives for the water frontage, riparian and wet pasture areas. This acquisition protects and restores habitat to benefit ESA-listed salmonids, including spring Chinook, steelhead, and bull trout. The project also included a feasibility and design element to advance a suite of restoration actions on the acquisition property and other protected properties within the adjacent stream reach. The 2007 Upper Columbia Recovery Plan identifies the need to improve habitat diversity and quantity in the lower Twisp River by restoring riparian habitat and reconnecting side channels and the floodplain (where feasible). The protections acquired through this grant secure the ability to address each strategy identified in the Plan. The Twisp River is a Category 2 watershed with major spawning areas for steelhead and spring Chinook. The upper watershed supports the most important bull trout subpopulation in the Methow Core Area. Spring Chinook and steelhead redds are often found near the protected properties. This project is within Reach T2-B of the Lower Twisp River Reach Assessment (Inter-Fluve 2010). The protections secured with the assistance of the RCO provide opportunities for implementation of restoration actions identified in the assessment and adds to the benefits from 62 adjacent protected acres, including 14.5 acres immediately adjacent, owned by MSRF.
