DESCRIPTION
Trout Unlimited - Washington Water Project's (TU-WWP) Chewuch River Permanent Instream Flow Project will address the compounding effects of irrigation withdrawals on late summer through winter low flows in the lower eight miles of the Chewuch River. Permanent instream flows in the Chewuch River and downstream in the mainstem Methow River will benefit three fish species listed under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA): Upper Columbia River (UCR) steelhead, UCR spring Chinook salmon, and Columbia River (CR) bull trout. Portions of the river are designated as Critical Habitat for all three ESA-listed species and Essential Fish Habitat for Chinook and coho salmon and also supports bull trout. These flow reductions will be made possible by increasing irrigation system efficiencies as existing earthen canals are shaped and lined and/or piped. The project also involves implementation of the following habitat actions: increase of off-channel habitats and wetlands, beaver reintroduction, and woody debris installation to benefit fish. The project includes four primary objectives: (1) Reduce irrigation diversions by the Chewuch Canal Company (CCC) when flow in the Chewuch is less than or equal to 100 cfs; (2) Change the season of diversion for reservoir storage from traditionally low-flow periods after the irrigation season to spring and early summer when flows in the Chewuch are higher; These biological objectives will be achieved by: (3) Piping two additional sections of the
