DESCRIPTION
The Upper Wenatchee Watershed Stewardship project is a partnership between the Ponderosa Community near Plain and the Chelan County Natural Resources Department, Cascadia Conservation District, and Trout Unlimited. This project aims to promote education, watershed stewardship, and conservation to the 450 Ponderosa Community residents who live along 1.6 miles of Wenatchee River waterfront. This project is funded by the Community Salmon Fund which is a partnership between the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the State Salmon Recovery Funding Board.
The riparian assessment report (see pdf file available for download from this page) documents the existing conditions of the shoreline habitat adjacent to the Upper Wenatchee River within the Ponderosa Community . This assessment of existing habitat conditions was used to prioritize shoreline areas for riparian vegetation enhancement projects.
In summer 2011, 18 landowners participated in a program to install over 500 native plants on their property to enhance the condition of the riparian area adjacent to the Wenatchee River. Cascadia Conservation District hosted a "Watershed Fair" event in August 2011 and August 2012 where approximately 100 participants learned about watershed stewardship. Project partners have published six articles in the community newsletter, the Needler, with information about the riparian assessment, riparian plantings, and outreach event. This project was developed by working with Doug Pendleton, the chair of the Ponderosa Community Greenbelt and Watershed Committee and it is consistent with other watershed efforts.
