DESCRIPTION
Phase 1: This phase protects critical areas of the White and Napeequa Rivers at River Mile 11 of the White River on the Tall Timber Ranch, a 100+ acre camp operated by the Presbyterian church. The easement extinguishes all development rights and limits other uses on two 20 acre easement areas: one with approximately 4,480 feet of riverbank on the White River, and the other with approximately 2,880 feet of riverbank on one side and 375 feet of riverbank on both sides of the Napeequa. The easement allows only non-motorized trail use (except for handicapped access) and similar existing camp activities within the two 20 acre easement areas. The easement will assure access for maintenance of the Forest Service engineered log jam installed several years ago, and for fish and habitat monitoring. CDLT partnered in phase i1 with the Cascade Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group to install an riparian planning project along the Napeequa River and to place five interpretative signs along a trail between the Forest Service Road and the White River. These six signs, on Glacial Hitory, Human History, Native FIsh of the White River, Floodplain Finction, and Wood at Work, provide the backbone for salmon education for thousands of camperers and the general public alike. Phase 2: This phase added a conservation easement on 20 acres including 1100 feet of riverfront along the White River, its confluence with the Napeequa River, and 2200 feet along both sides of the Napeequa River north of the confluence, for a total of over a mile. It connects the two easements acquired under Phase 1 of the project, that protect 40 acres contiguous to the east and west of this site. The White River watershed has some of the best aquatic habitat and healthiest native fish populations found in the Columbia basin (USFS 1998). Three federally listed fish species - endangered spring Chinook, endangered steelhead, and threatened bull trout - use the White River for migration, spawning, and rearing. The river also provides some of the best spawning habitat for sockeye, one of only two remaining stocks in the Columbia Basin.
