DESCRIPTION
The Twisp Project was initiated in 2002 to acquire and hold the properties for long-term protection and enhancement of seven development parcels adjacent to the River. Five of the seven parcels originally identified were acquired under agreement #00-1676, also utilizing matching funds from USFWS and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Two parcels were acquired comprising 10.36 acres. The acquisition completed the purchase and protection of all 24.24 acres of contiguous riverfront, side channel, and riparian habitat. The acquisition provides permanent protection for spawning, rearing, and over-wintering habitat for endangered spring Chinook salmon and summer steelhead trout. These parcels were at risk of development and were critical to continued high quality habitat function in this reach. MSRF secured interim landowner cooperation to use the side channel properties to provide off-channel rearing habitat. MSRF's acquisition removed development rights and allowed completion of the planned restoration projects including: re-connection of side channel habitat, floodplain storage, interpretive education, public access, trails, and an educational facility. Community support came from the Town of Twisp, WDFW, Methow Conservancy, Colville Tribes, and Yakama Nation, as well as the willing sellers.
