DESCRIPTION
The confluence of the Chewuch and Methow Rivers occurs at the southern end of the Town of Winthrop. Riparian conditions have been extensively degraded by historic commercial development and road infrastructure. This project identified 2 potential work sites where riparian stands could be reestablished. The first area, located approximately 0.2 miles upstream from the lower highway access bridge on the left bank of the Chewuch River, and would have improved .04 miles of shoreline. Despite considerable design and facilitation effort with the landowners, improvements at the first site could not be implemented under this project. The second area, located approximately 0.1 miles upstrean from the lower highway access bridge at the location of a proposed pedestrian access bridge. Site 2 was fully implemented in fall of 2011. At site 2, LWD with root wads was installed along a .04 miles section of shoreline on the left bank to add increased habitat complexity instream and improve shoreline stability. Riparian planting were included for riparian buffer establishment.
