DESCRIPTION
MSRF purchased land on the right bank
of the lower Twisp River at river mile 1.9 to provide riparian
protections to the area. MSRF granted a deed restriction to IAC to
remove development rights from these properties. The MSRF diversion and a
side channel and pond complex are on this land. For the past 3 years
the MSRF has been working to provide year-round surface water flow into
and through the isolated side channel and pond complex and to restore
habitat.
The Elbow Coulee primary side channel was re-connected by removing
the manmade dike which prevents live flows from entering. A rock sill
flow control structure was constructed in the mainstem to allow
flows to enter the reconnected side channel at elevation 1942 feet. The
rock sill on river left bank at the entrance to the primary side channel
inlet serves as a gradecontrol structure for flows exceeding elevation
1942 feet. The project also removed a manmade rock and earthen dike,
which prevented live flows from entering the abandoned flood plain and
primary side channel. The dike was four feet tall and extends
approximately 300 feet. Excavated material was disposed of on site.
Wood taken out was salvaged for use in the woody debris complex in upper
end of the re-connected primary side channel. Riparian buffer
establishment is being achieved through plantings at this site.
