DESCRIPTION
MSRF partners with Bureau of Reclamation and Methow Conservancy to identify and prioritize riparian enhancement projects that will add value to passage access and conservation projects. All projects will focus on TES species and habitat. In 2008-09 projects will occur at 4 sites on the Methow, Twisp and Chewuch Rivers. Riparian enhancement projects include streambank stabilization and riparian treatments such as installing fencing or reconstructing existing fencing. Riparian enhancement projects generally involve installing exclusion fencing and/or new planting to establish a riparian buffer. Except in areas of active grazing exclusion fencing areas are established based on observed need and don't prevent access to the stream by native wildlife. All vegetation projects use native species; include vegetation management strategies that are consistent with the local topography and climate; specify seed and plant sources; and use only certified noxious weed-free mulch. Fence projects are implemented in conjunction with a prescribed grazing plan (for properties with continued grazing and conservation easements) to minimize impacts to the riparian area and streambanks. Riparian buffers generally range from 35 to 100 feet wide.
