The Hancock Springs Restoration project enhanced and opened up approximatley one mile of critical rearing and spawning habitat within the upper Methow basin. The creek is located 8 miles north of Winthrop, WA. This area has the highest density of spawning ESA listed spring chinook and steelhead in the basin and nearby tributaries have ample populations of bull trout. Hancock Creek has unique hydrologic conditions that are very favorable to salmonids. Cool temperatures in the summer, warm winter temperatures, high fall flows and accessible rearing and spawning environments add to its potential of critical salmonid habitat. In addition, with the dewatering of much of the upper river during winter, the rearing habitat the spring will offer is critical to juvenile survival. The project implemented a systematic approach to recover natural stream processes to benifit anadromous fish. Fences have been constructed to manage livestock and deer. Native wetland vegetation has been planted, degraded streambanks were reformed, instream structures were constructed to promote bank stabilization, decrease erosion and to provide cover, resting pools were constructed, spawning gravels were placed, and brook trout populations were decreased to address limiting factors. Brook Trout are a non native invasive species that compete with ESA listed stocks for limited resources (food and space).
