DESCRIPTION
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife used this funding to upgrade a fish screen facility located approx. 8 miles NW of Winthrop, WA that was constructed in the 1940's. The facility provides irrigation water to about 300 acres of land used for cattle & alfalfa. The head gate and fish screen are located on US Forest Service property and were one of six "Section 7d" diversions prohibited by NMFS from diverting water in 1999 until mesh size and velocity criteria were in compliance with current screening criteria. The 1 fps approach velocity impinges ESA-listed spring Chinook, steelhead, and bull trout fry.
As a temporary fix, WDFW installed stainless steel perforated plate with 3/32" diameter holes on the exiting drum screen with funding assistance from the Methow Conservancy. To comply with the approach velocity criteria Skyline Canal was required to reduce their flow from 20 to 9.5 cfs. However, due to conveyance losses, they were unable to deliver water to all users, and subsequently, did not deliver water during the 1999 irrigation season.
WDFW upgraded and replaced the screen in August 2000.
