DESCRIPTION
The landowner's objective was to restore fish habitat in Hancock Creek. Hancock Creek is one mile long and is spring fed. In general it has excellent water quality for juvenile chinook and steelhead, as well as spawning for adult steelhead. Off channel rearing areas that do not freeze are important in this area of the Methow River. Three rocked livestock watering points will maintain the integrity of the stream banks to prevent erosion. The surface water right will be converted to a ground water right and a well will be drilled which will eliminate the need for ponding of the water above the Wolf Creek road created by the undersized culverts. These undersized culverts created a velocity barrier to fish. The undersized culvert under Wolf Creek road a county road was also replaced and was funded by USFWS. The project Objectives were to convert the surface water right to a ground water right and install a well. Project included the removal of the existing culvert on Wolf Creek Road which is an upmigration barrier to juvenile salmonids and replaced it with an arched culvert. Utilization of the springs will be monitored and evaluated by year-round passage fish counts snorkel surveys biosampling and estimated survival rates. The project goal is to increase the population size of naturally producing spring chinook and steelhead in the Methow River. A secondary goal is to increase the amount of available spring-fed off-channel rearing habitat for juvenile salmonids in the upper M
