DESCRIPTION
The Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group (RFEG) has been working on the Similkameen-Okanogan Confluence area since 2001. In this time we have completed: a fish use and habitat assessment; a restoration plan focusing on the geomorphic history identifying problem areas and restoration alternatives; a technical review of the restoration options; and a conceptual restoration design report. These initiatives have primarily been funded by SRFB. From this research RFEG is prepared to move ahead with the first identified project: Reconnecting the Similkameen River with its river-right floodplain on a mix of private and federal lands just south of Oroville. The identified project area in this proposal reflects altered flow and sediment transport patterns that have led to increased bank erosion and siltation of spawning and rearing habitat disconnection of side channels disrupted channel-forming processes and loss of riparian habitat and wood recruitment. This area supports the largest concentration of summer Chinook in the watershed. The proposed actions represent measures designed to work with the current altered natural processes in the reach. The project is intended to provide critical juvenile side channel habitat as the best possible alternative given larger scale constraints posed by land and water uses.
