DESCRIPTION
Okanogan County Noxious Weed Control Board over the next two years will inspect, map, and survey Okanogan and Similkameen Rivers and their tributaries to develop, utilize and perform integrated aquatic/riparian weed management strategies, including but not limited to hand pull, biological agents, and re-planting to assist in protecting fish habitat areas from invasive noxious weeds. We will coordinate our plan and join efforts with our partnerships already existing with two weed districts in Canada addressing international noxious weeds, water and aquatic issues. With this project we will evaluate, restore and reclaim the waterways and riparian areas. Okanogan County rivers and streams suffer from extreme summer temperatures, fine sediment and low flow problems. Our ecological diversity is being impacted by uncontrolled noxious weeds. They provide no food value, form dense colonies that clog waterways, cause sedimentation, reduce native vegetation, lower oxygen and water levels and cause erosion to river banks. It is critical to address noxious weeds in the aquatic/riparian areas without delay to reduce their spread that's causing reduction in viable habitat. Implementing this approach coordinating with Canada, landowners, recreation areas and State agencies we CAN and WILL save water quality for all salmon and fish species by improving our ecosystems.
