DESCRIPTION
Eagle Creek is a tributary to the Twisp River with a natural waterfall barrier about 1/2 mile above the confluence and a few 100' above the Eagle ditch point of diversion. Habitat in lower Eagle Creek is accessible to all ESA listed fish species: spring chinook salmon, summer steelhead, and bull trout. The creek has a 3% or higher gradient and does not provide spawning habitat for any of the listed fish, but is suitable rearing habitat for juvenile and sub-adult bull trout, rainbow/steelhead trout, and spring chinook. The irrigation diversion, which is currently unscreened, withdraws 1.5 cfs and is located on the left bank (looking upstream) nearly 1/4 mile above the confluence with the Twisp River. A fish screen was initially proposed for this project, but after consultation with USFS, WDFW, and the landowner, it was agreed that a fish screen was problematic and would only offer a short term solution. Removing the ditch and installing a well is considered the best option. This project proposes to install a well on the landowner's property, and to decommission the irrigation ditch by dismantling the headgate and allowing the remainder of the ditch to regenerate naturally. The landowner agrees to install and maintain the well. Funds from this grant will be used to purchase and install a generator and housing structure. This project will eliminate the loss of fish associated with water diversion, and transportation loss of water in an open ditch.
