DESCRIPTION
This reach of Wolf Creek was channelized in the late 1970s after a major flood left the site with a high width/depth ratio causing a loss of salmonid habitat due to the deposition of bedload and limited flow depths during periods of low flow thus inhibiting fish migration into the watershed. There was no spawning gravel or rearing habitat in this reach. Channel enhancement consisted of placing 16 rock and log cross-vanes every 1.5 to 2.0 times the backfull width (approximately every 50 feet). Each vane has a maximum height of 0.5 feet at its apex (low flow notch). Root wads and boulders were installed to create a pool effect. The Wolf Creek Reclamation District (WCRD) in cooperation with several private landowners and encouragement of fishery agencies helped to implement this project.
Okanogan County used this funding to enhance fish passage and create additional instream habitat during low flow periods for steelhead and Chinook and bull trout in Wolf Creek upstream for 400 feet from its confluence with the Methow River. This reach of the creek was channelized in the late 1970's after a major flood, leaving the site with a high width/depth ratio, causing a loss of salmonid habitat due to the deposition of bedload and limited flow depths during periods of low flow, thus inhibiting fish migration into the watershed. There was no spawning gravel or rearing habitat in this reach. The stream channel was enhanced by placing 16 rock and log cross-vanes every 1.5 to 2.0 times the bankfull width (approximately every 50 feet). Each vane has a maximum height of 0.5 feet at its apex (low flow notch). Root wads and boulders were installed to create a pool effect. The exact location of all structures was determined in the field by the engineer. The Wolf Creek Reclamation District (WCRD), in cooperation with several private landowners and encouragement of fishery agencies, undertook this project. The project is consistent with the goals of the Habitat Conservation Plan being developed by WCRD and Haub Brothers Enterprises Trust. The project was identified in the the Biological Opinion being prepared by NMFS as the preferred Reasonable & Prudent Alternative.
