DESCRIPTION
The Dryden project is a cooperative habitat enhancement project designed to help endangered spring chinook, endangered summer steelhead trout and other salmonids within the lower Wentachee River. The project site is owned by WDFW and consists of 8.8 acres of floodplain and riparian shoreline located adjacent to the Wenatchee River. The site was mined as part of a gravel pit operation in the l950's. A dike isolates the property from the river along 1500 feet of riverfront. The project will breach a portion of the dike and construct an inlet structure and a series of inland channels. The inlet itself will be an open channel design and will be armored with native oversized round rock. Large rock, logs, and rootwads will be placed as habitat structures in the channels. Vegetation will be planted on the channel banks and all areas disturbed through construction. Development along the main stem Wenatchee River has caused significant loss of off-channel habitat and floodplain function. Much off-channel habitat has been taken out of salmonid production through past land use practices and stream habitat alterations and fragmentation. The objective of this project is to create prime, high quality, rear-round habitat, predator escape cover, and high flow refuge areas for salmonids.
