DESCRIPTION
The White River has migrated toward FS Road 6400 and this heavily used recreation road is threatened by lateral migration of the river. By taking proactive measures, we have ensured continued access to two campgrounds and one trailhead serving the Pacific Crest Trail and Glacier Peak Wilderness Area above the proposed project area. Proactive measures, have also reduced potential degradation to the White River through road and fill failures and emergency road rehabilitation, which would likely include large rock riprap. The Forest Service constructed an engineered log jam to armor the eroding bank and relocate a segment of this road further onto Tall Timber property away from the river. This project allowed for greater rehabilitation of streambank components such as riparian vegetation and future large woody debris recruitment while affording further longevity of the road. Tall Timber Ranch granted a right of way easement for the new road location including extra width on the river side of the road to allow for maintenance of the log jam and rehabilitated road segment.
Project Restoration Goals:
1. Relocated 320 feet of Forest Service Road 6400, away from the White River.
2. Constructed a log jam along 100 lineal feet of White River streambank utilizing 100 or more large pieces of woody debris and some boulders.
3. Inserted willow and cottonwood live stakes into the streambank at the log jam site.
4. Decompacted and revegetate old roadbed.
5. Contracted administration.
6. Effectiveness monitoring for three years (2003-2005).
