DESCRIPTION
This restoration plan is intended to assist Landowner/Producer in the rehabilitation of Yaksum Creek to prevent flooding of the adjacent orchard and eliminate any maintenance activities below the ordinary high water mark that is regularly needed. When this plan is implemented a riparian corridor should be established similar to the vegetation immediately up and downstream of his property.
Located south of the City of Cashmere, Yaksum Canyon is considered a rural setting in Chelan County. Land uses in this canyon are predominately used for agriculture with sporadic residential establishments scattered throughout the area. Yaksum Creek travels down this canyon crossing from one side of Yaksum Canyon Road to the other via culverts, eventually discharging into Mission Creek.
Yaksum Creek is a major source of irrigation water for orchardists throughout the canyon. In early spring the Icicle Creek Irrigation District opens the irrigation canal, which outflows into Yaksum Creek. When the irrigation system initially outflows the higher flows redistribute sediment and debris downstream, which had accumulated in the canal during the off-season. These conditions have caused flooding problems along the stretch of Yaksum Creek that passes through the project site. More specifically, this flooding takes place fromthe private driveway on the east side of Yaksum Canyon Road north 750 feet to an approximate 12-inch diameter, 60-foot long pipe (advanced drainage system (ADS) piping) that has been placed below the ordinary high water mark.
Cascadia Conservation District will continue to monitor and maintain site thorough December 31. 2010.
