DESCRIPTION
Hansen Creek was historically a productive tributary of the Skagit River supporting runs of Chinook, coho, pink, and chum salmon, steelhead trout and other species. Historic logging practices in the upper watershed combined with residential and agricultural development in the lower reaches have substantially degraded habitat conditions and increased flooding problems. A project to restore the alluvial fan in Reach 4 of Hansen Creek upstream of SR-20 was completed in 2009. That project has Improved habitat conditions and reduced sediment transport to downstream reaches. This project expanded restoration activities to Reach 5 of Hansen Creek, which extends from SR-20 downstream to Minkler Road. The goal is to restore natural processes in Hansen and Red Creeks, improve habitat conditions, and eliminate ongoing flood control activities. The specific objectives acheived for this first phase of the Reach 5 project were: 1) The successful acquistion of two parcels adjacent to Hansen Creek totaling approximately 87.5 acres. 2) Preliminary design work for restoration of Reach 5, which includes restoring channels and wetlands to natural configurations, setting back flood control berms to restore floodplain connectivity, and planting riparian areas with native vegetation. 3) Implement near-term restoration, including removing a culvert on Red Creek and replacing with a railcar bridge, removing 1,250 linear feet of flood control berm, and planting 10 acres with native vegetation
