DESCRIPTION
Skagit River System Cooperative, in partnership with Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group and Skagit Land Trust, requested funds to conduct riparian restoration in the Skagit River watershed. Restoration focused on improving the habitat quality of river floodplain and side channel areas, and continuing to protect current high-quality salmon habitat. The sites built upon restoration efforts of the past, while working towards the improvement of rearing and/or spawning habitat for Chinook, coho, sockeye, chum, and pink salmon, as well as steelhead and bull trout. The primary restoration goal at all sites was to protect and restore functional riparian and floodplain forests. This project worked with major landowners such as WDFW, Seattle City Light, Skagit Land Trust, and the Swinomish Indian tribe, as well as with new community partners including the Town of Hamilton to address riparian restoration needs in high priority areas. Activities included in this project were site preparation through the development of planting plans, the removal of invasive species, and initial planting of acquired conservation areas. Overall, native vegetation was planted on more than 34 acres across six restoration sites. For administrative efficiencies and direct billing access to RCO, this grant was split into two. The parent grant is with the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group, 18-1501, and the scope and budget are split from that grant.
