DESCRIPTION
Design levee setback bordering the Swinomish Channel following a historic channel that would contribute an estimated 120 acres of tidal wetland habitat.
The proposed project assessed alternatives for a restoration action involving breaching a levee bordering the Swinomish Channel, and allowing the adjacent former marsh to be reconnected to tidal inundation. Swinomish Indian Tribal Community (SITC) worked with the Skagit River System Cooperative (SRSC) and a consulting team led by Blue Coast Engineering to review three alternatives for accomplishing this action, including the 130 acre footprint provided in our original proposal, along with two more extensive options. All alternatives would be located on tribal land. Based on our analysis, and extensive outreach, the SITC Environment and Lands Committee recommended that the footprint be increased from the original proposal, and SITC Leadership concurred with that recommendation. A preliminary design package for that alternative is complete. As currently designed the project will construct approximately 7,900 lineal feet of new dike extending back to the western edge of the historic marsh surface. When implemented, the restoration project will contribute an estimated 250 acres of tidal wetland habitat at the north end of Swinomish Channel. This action, coupled with past projects, have been steadily improving critical nearshore habitats along the Swinomish Channel salmon and steelhead migratory corridor.
