Skagit Land Trust (SLT) and Seattle City Light (SCL) continued their effective collaboration to protect high quality Chinook habitat in the Skagit River system through cooperative land acquisition. This collaboration has proven to be cost effective both from an administrative perspective (sharing in grant writing, resources and match) as well as stewardship perspective (which organization is the best fit to own the land for management after acquisition). The project area included Tier 1 floodplains of the mainstem Skagit and Sauk rivers. Tier 2 and 3 properties will be considered if the SWC develops a methodology for prioritizing Tier 2 and Tier 3 acquisitions. DID WE DO ANY TIER 2? The Tiered areas are described in the Skagit Watershed Council’s Year 2010 Strategic Approach (Strategic Approach). Targeted parcels were determined by the guidelines identified in 1) Skagit Watershed Council’s (SWC) Year 2010 Strategic Approach, 2) The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) 2010 Sauk and Suiattle River Acquisition Assessment 3) SLT’s 2000 Middle Skagit Assessment, 4) TNC’s 2003 Upper Skagit Assessment; 5 ) SWC’s 2012 Middle Skagit Assessment, and 6) properties overlooked in the reach level assessments that qualified for protection through new site-specific information and/or further analytical work approved by SWC’s Protection Committee. This project was funded by the Salmon Recovery Funding Board (SRFB) on December 4, 2013, as a $1,156,470 comprehensive acquisition and landowner outreach grant for both the "middle" and "upper" Skagit River reaches (13-1576 administered by Seattle City Light). For administration purposes, the project was split into two separate grant agreements. The Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration (PSAR) grant funds could be transferred between grants, if necessary. SLT's SRFB grant had both an outreach/assessment component as well as an acquisition component. As a result of active outreach/assessment and review of various real estate listings, ten properties were acquired with SLT's 2013 SRFB grant. Two additional SWC approved properties were also secured and acquired through SCL's 2016 SRFB grant and SCL's mitigation money.
