DESCRIPTION
The purpose removed approximately 400 linear feet of rip-rap bank protection from the Suiattle River and Sulphur Creek, and removed 600 feet of road along a Suiattle River side channel, thus restoring approximately 6 acres of floodplain and improving mainstem edge habitat complexity for the benefit of Spring Chinook salmon and other species. The rip-rap structures were located on US Forest Service Road 26 at milepost 13 and river mile 26, where the road was closed to motorized access. Rip-rap bank protection structures impact salmon habitat by reducing mainstem edge habitat complexity, degrading riparian functions, and limiting the formation of secondary channels and off-channel habitat in the floodplain. Hayman et al. (1996) found that Chinook smolts strongly prefer natural bank edges and backwaters to hydromodified banks, and in a follow-up study, Beamer and Henderson (1998) found the density of juvenile Chinook along natural banks was on the order of 5 times greater than hydromodified banks. Beamer and Henderson (1998) also found that juvenile coho used natural banks at a density 4 times higher than rip-rap banks, and where rootwads were present the density was almost 18 times higher. Complex natural edge habitat along mainstem river channels provides important foraging and refugia opportunities for juvenile Chinook salmon and other species.
