DESCRIPTION
Ennis Creek is an upper Samish River tributary providing the main spawning grounds in the basin for coho steelhead & cutthroat. Ennis runs in an undersized ditch, providing little habitat along Innis Creek Rd for 1,000 ft before flowing into the Samish River through a submerged undersized culvert. The channel no longer effectively transports sediment & Innis Creek Road frequently floods & sustains damage. The ditched section is maintained & dredged by Whatcom County under emergency conditions. Natural alluvial fan development is precluded by the situation & access to prime spawning habitat is limited. There is no pool riffle habitat complexity. Salmon have been observed spawning & stranded on the gravel portions of Innis Creek Road. This restoration project involved re-establishing the historic channel across Innis Creek Road thus directing flow into the Samish River upstream of its present crossing within a 50 acre parcel that is being acquired for restoration by Whatcom Land Trust. Spawning habitat will be enhanced through natural gravel deposition. LWD was installed to help process gravel & maintain pool riffle complex. As part of the project, Whatcom County will design & install a new crossing through Innis Creek Road. The project restored 2,300 linear ft of Samish River & Ennis Creek habitat as well as increase spawning habitat area by at least 360 sq. m.
