DESCRIPTION
In 2005 the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group completed a project to enhance habitat for salmon on a 686-foot long section of Childs Creek downstream from Highway 20 near Lyman, Washington. The project built upon the success of an earlier project implemented upstream on the Hamerski property. The Hamerski project, completed in 1996, is similar in scope and successfully restored spawning and riparian habitat for coho salmon. Additional riparian restoration work has been completed downstream of the project site on the Bjorkland property.
The Childs Creek (Garver) project established a riparian area on almost 700 lineal feet streambank (approximately one acre) along Childs Creek. Habitat enhancement consisted of revegetation of stream banks as well as the placement of large woody debris in the channel. Re-establishment of native riparian vegetation will ultimately help to reduce high stream temperatures, stabilize stream banks, reduce sedimentation and provide a source of large woody debris which will aid in the formation of riffles and pools for habitat complexity. Over the short-term installation of LWD will create pools, increase habitat complexity and reduce bank erosion. The ultimate goal ofthis project is to increase the size of salmonid runs in the Skagit River.
