DESCRIPTION
Objective: Insure that chinook that mistakenly stray into the Baker Trap are not transported to Baker Lake, so that they can contribute to production in the Skagit River.
Method: All chinook that are caught in the Baker Trap, between August 1 and October 31, will be Floy-tagged, operculum-punched, and trucked back to the Skagit River and released several miles downstream of the Baker Trap. Thereafter, only Floy-tagged or operculum-punched chinook that enter the Baker Trap (i.e., returnees) will be transported to Baker Lake.
Benefits: Until recent years, all fish caught in the trap at the base of Baker Dam, including all adult chinook, were trucked to Baker Lake. However, Baker Lake is inhospitable to chinook; very few chinook smolts have ever been counted out of Baker Lake, which makes it likely that most of the production from those adults is lost in the reservoir. Most of the adults caught in the trap, therefore, have probably only strayed into the trap, and didn't intend to return to the Baker to spawn. Thus, their contribution to production in the Skagit River is lost. With this project, only double-returnees to the Baker Trap, i.e., fish that really intend to spawn in the Baker, will be trucked to Baker Lake. All other chinook will be allowed to spawn in the Skagit River, where their contribution to production will be much greater than it would have been in Baker Lake.
