DESCRIPTION
The project objectives achieved for the Hansen Creek alluvial fan and wetland restoration were restoration of the historic floodplain, riparian habitat and self-sustaining hydrologic and sediment transport processes for improved salmon habitat and productivity. The project restored 140 acres of pasture and isolated depressional wetlands into 53 acres of alluvial fan, 87 acres of riverine forest, and flow-through wetlands. The combination of alluvial fan and forested, flow-through wetland restoration features include wood and grade control in the mainstem, wood in the fan and wetlands and native plantings and/or seeding for the entire site. The project restored floodplain functions that moderate the influences of high-discharge events, improve sediment transport, gravel sorting, water storage, and increase sinuosity and channel complexity in the main stem and promote formation of complex side channels for fish access and use. Flood flows and sediment movement into the floodplain build a water reservoir that contributes to flows in the dry season, restore stream processes that support productive aquatic habitats, and reduce downstream flooding and the upstream headcutting present today. Freshwater spawning and rearing limitations are the result of habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation. This project implements identified strategies in the Skagit Chinook Recovery Plan, chapters 9 and 10 for both spawning and rearing habitat restoration.
