DESCRIPTION
This project enhanced fish access and restored tidal inundation to a 7.3 acre portion of a 59.4 acre tidal channel lagoon and marsh complex. Formerly, upper portions of the salt marsh received muted tidal volumes and fish access was severely limited due to a road crossing (Similk Bay Road) and a non-functioning tide gate. An extensive feasibility study was completed in 2007 (McBride 2007) that identified removal of this road as the restoration action with the greatest habitat benefit. The study also documented portions of the site that had been ditched and/or filled, and identified creosote-treated debris on the site from a previous log storage operation. The design and permitting of the proposal was completed in SRFB project 07-1808N. Project components included removing a portion of the road, elevation of a County Roadway, realignment of utilities, removal of debris, removal of undersized culverts, and native vegetation restoration. The finished project now allows unimpeded fish access and tidal exchange that will allow for re-establishment native vegetation communities in isolated marsh fragments. These actions also encourage project longevity by addressing impaired processes that maintained the historic lagoon. Restoration of these processes translates to increased habitat area and quality for fry migrant Chinook and other native salmon species, and will benefit forage fish and wildlife species as well. Final designs and permit documents were developed as part a 2007 SRFB grant (07-1808N).
