DESCRIPTION
This project will correct a fish passage problem on a logging road that crosses Parson Creek on a tributary to the Samish River, which drains into Samish Bay and the Puget Sound. Parson Creek contains chinook, coho, chum, and pink salmon, as well as sea-run and resident populations of cutthroat, rainbow, stellhead, and Dolly Varden. Correcting the Parson Creek barrier will restore access to nearly 2,568 feet of high quality spawning habitat favorable to coho and steelhead. Bankfull width was measured above and below the culvert to be 13 feet wide. The gradient of the stream above and below this crossing is 5%. It consists primarily of stable step-pool habitat with substantial wood debris and a well-developed forest canopy. Depending on the outcome of site specific design, the repair will consists of the following options: large diameter strutual steel plate pipe based on WDFW Stream Simulation Option; bottomless pipe arch culvert; or 45-foot long bridge (Rapid Span or Janiki) with footings set above and back of bankfull width.
