DESCRIPTION
Skagit Fish Enhancement Group used this funding to remove a fish passage barrier--an old driveway bridge and concrete sill on NP Creek, which drains into the upper Samish River at river mile 25 near Wickersham. The Samish River and its tributaries are known to provide an important fisheries resource to Samish Bay. The project replaced the old bridge with a 35-foot beam bridge and installed several rock weirs for grade control. The project improved passage for coho, cutthroat, and steelhead. NP Creek is the second most productive stream in the upper Samish watershed and has had record returns since a fish barrier was removed 50 meters downstream of this project site. The project provides access to 1.5 miles of habitat for a total of about 7,400 sq. meters of habitat. Two of the accessible tributaries provide pool-riffle habitat for spawning while the northern tributary provides rearing habitat.
