DESCRIPTION
Skagit Land Trust purchased 106 acres in and around Minkler Lake, which is a mile-long remnant ox-bow lake located in the Skagit River flood plain six miles east of Sedro Woolley on the north side of the river. The property is a long, relatively narrow tract, which encompasses most of the lake and wetland system, and the habitat conditions on the site are good. It provides important rearing habitat for juvenile coho salmon and for sea-run cutthroat trout, which access the system from the Skagit River through Childs Creek. In addition to protection of high quality existing habitat, opportunities to restore greater natural function to the Minkler Lake system are increased by Skagit Land Trust ownership. Now that the property is acquired, the Trust will explore opportunities to expand on protection on other key parcels in area. The following objectives have been achieved: 1) acquire 106 acres of key habitat; 2) conduct baseline documentation of existing conditions of property and develop a management and restoration plan; 3) identify additional properties in the area where more acquisition would increase restoration and protection opportunities; 4) explore partnership and funding opportunities for preferred restoration options and for additional acquisition if appropriate.
