DESCRIPTION
The Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group (SFEG) used this funding to enhance the Verdoes Reach, 1,200 feet (394 meters) of the East Fork Nookachamps Creek channel, which is tributary to the Skagit River. The project included installation of six large woody debris structures in 2002 at river mile 1.25. The structures were designed to promote pool scour, gravel sorting, and pool-riffle habitat development. Structures included: debris catchers to maximize wood recruitment, promote flood plain process, and enhance adult and juvenile rearing cover; flow deflectors and root wads to provide cover and rearing habitat; and pilings for anchoring. In addition, an old bridge crossing abutment fill was removed from the floodplain. Approximately 20 acres of riparian area was planted with native trees and shrubs by SFEG staff and volunteers. SFEG held four large volunteer planting parties where 100 volunteers donated 663 hours of time to planting native trees and shrubs. SFEG’s field staff also performed site preparation for the plantings and maintenance to ensure promote growth. Tree wraps were installed on many trees to protect them from rodent damage. The Verdoes Reach is the site of the old Verdoes Dairy. The entire reach runs through a permanent conservation easement held by the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s Wetland Reserve Program. Every species of salmonid except sockeye accesses this stretch of stream. The Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group (SFEG) used funding from Jobs For the Environment (JFE) to design and prepare a conceptual plan to develop design alternatives for restoration.
