DESCRIPTION
The Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group (SFEG) used this funding to address fish passage issue in Marblegate Slough. Marblegate Slough stems from a Skagit River side channel that is located 1/2 mile downstream of the Cascade River on Rockport/Cascade Road near Marblemount in Skagit County, WA. The slough flows during high water but is also fed by ground water that supplies year round water to the slough's lower half. The slough provides high quality off-channel rearing for coho salmon as well as off-channel spawning for coho and chum salmon. Chinook salmon access the channel as well. Portions of the slough are located within a 50-acre protected common area of the 200-acre Marblegate Community Association. A gravel road crossing had isolated upper and lower segments of the slough, affected floodflow process, and formed a partial anadromous barrier. It consisted of rock fill and two undersized culverts that limited up- and downstream movement of salmonids, isolating 1,770 linear feet of channel and an estimated 750m2 of spawning habitat. The crossing provides access to the common area and river trails for a private community association. The rock crossing and culverts were removed and replaced with a 48-foot flatcar bridge across the slough, enabling salmon to use off-channel habitat for winter rearing and spawning. The improved crossing helps restore floodplain processes and opens up extensive high-quality forested off-channel slough habitat for a variety of salmon along the Skagit River.
