DESCRIPTION
Skagit CD partnered with the USFS on upgrading the Goodman Road system - #2081 (MP 0.0-3.5) and #2080 (MP 0.0-1.0). This project is designed to reduce the risk of road failure, erosion, sediment production and their negative effects to the Sauk River and Dutch Creek. Dutch Creek is estimated to have 0.55 miles (884 m) of anadromous fish habitat and directly affects RM 29.7-33.1 of anadromous fish habitat of the Sauk River downstream to Goodman Creek.
The project consists of culvert replacement, ditching and fill stabilization. This roadwork was first identified in 1996 during a road deficiency survey and again in 1999 following storm activity. The treatment of both roads is the last roadwork to complete along the south side of this Sauk River reach and the Dutch Creek drainage. The upper portions of the road system and its spur roads have been treated between 1996-1998. Road 2079 was treated in 1997 with the bridge over Dutch Creek removed in 1999.
A companion project, a downstream fish passage project located on the Mt. Loop Highway is currently in the design phase and is scheduled for replacement in 2002. This project will reconnect the 0.55 miles of isolated Coho and Steelhead habitat.
Expected results: Water quality will improve and the risk of landslides/sediment delivery will reduced. The project targets the limiting factor of egg to fry survival due to the clogging of spawning gravels for native Chinook, Coho, Steelhead and Dolly Varden.
