DESCRIPTION
Skagit Fish Enhancement Group used this funding to correct two fish passage problems at an old railroad grade on Lake Creek. Lake Creek connects two lakes in Skagit County, Big Lake to the north and Lake McMurray to the south. Lake Creek has a fantastic coho run. On the south side a previously installed 8" pipe 4 meters in length did provide sufficient flow to allow for passage of juvenile salmonids. The project removed the pipe and replaced it with a 36" culvert sunk 12". On the north side of the road a 36" diameter culvert was replaced with a 48" sunk culvert. Replacing these two blockages opened 7500 square meters of wetland habitat for coho rearing and 1220 square meters of spawning habitat for coho above this rearing area. This project site was identified by Mike Olis with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) SHEAR program. A WDFW Environmental Engineer brought the project idea to SFEG. The project falls within the target area for restoration activities identified by the Skagit Watershed Council's strategic plan. Partnering with WDFW and the Association of General Contractors (AGC) significantly reduced costs of the project. Volunteer community members were utilized to perform monitoring activities.
