DESCRIPTION
The Skagit Conservation District worked with the Skagit Watershed Council partners to install livestock fencing, and plant native riparian and wetland vegetation, on 17 acres along the mainstem of Nookachamps Creek and its tributaries The project restored critical and preferred salmon spawning & rearing habitat. Target stocks include Puget Sound Chinook and Coho as well as other anadromous and resident species. Anticipated benefits as the property returns to natural habitat conditions includes the following: reduction of water temperature, restoration of historic floodplain hydrologic conditions, future large woody debris recruitment, increased bank stability, return to natural sediment inputs, and the preservation of a natural channel migration zone. Past developmental, agricultural, and forestry practices have contributed to lack of riparian vegetation, impairments to water quality, and alterations to floodplain hydrologic and channel conditions, thus having a negative impact on salmon habitat. The Skagit Watershed Council endorsed this project as consistent with its salmon recovery strategy. The project builds upon the success of nearby conservation projects of the SCD (Nookachamps Riparian Phase 1, Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program) and other SWC member organizations, including riparian planting, fish passage barrier removal, and permanent easements.
