DESCRIPTION
Skagit Land Trust (SLT), a private non-profit land conservation organization, purchased a perpetual conservation easement on 60 acres of private agricultural land located within the Skagit River floodplain just east of Sedro Woolley, WA. The easement protects riparian areas and side-channel habitat on 2 sloughs and the main-stem of the Skagit River(>6000 linear feet of shoreline). Forty-three acres of mature riparian woodland were protected. The easement will prohibit development, subdivision and grazing and crop farming. All five species of salmon benefit from this project, in particular it includes spawning and rearing habitat for Puget Sound Chinook. Portions of the riparian buffers were in abandoned pasture. After the easement was acquired, the Trust worked with the landowner to assist in replanting the accessible portions of these buffer areas. The landowner retained the right to maintain a small amount of pasture area in open meadow for aesthetic purposes (not to exceed 5 percent, with no cultivation or livestock permitted).
