The Port Susan Bay (PSB) Restoration for Resiliency project will restore key ecological processes to 150 acres of estuarine tidal marsh. Restoration actions will include: distributary and blind tidal channel excavation, creation of additional tidal and river connections, and removal of remnant dike material inhibiting freshwater distribution. By expanding the amount of viable estuary habitat in the delta, the project will increase juvenile salmon rearing capacity for several species, including Chinook salmon. The project has received funding for design and permitting; construction costs are partially funded. This proposal seeks $1,995,249 to move forward with full construction.
TNC will be exploring the use of explosives to carve secondary and tertiary tidal channels beginning with a test blast in Summer 2022. If effective, blasting will be used on a larger scale in the restoration project, paired with traditional methods.
This project is a priority for partners working in the watershed: it will ensure that the value of upstream salmon recovery projects is not lost at the estuary by increasing functional estuarine rearing habitat, needed to avoid a Chinook salmon habitat bottleneck. It is a critical first step for forthcoming delta habitat expansion by the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians and the Tulalip Tribes directly adjacent. Lastly, it is part of an integrated effort by the Sustainable Lands Strategy (SLS) to advance fish, flood, and farm benefits in the w
