DESCRIPTION
We are in confidential negotiations with landowners in the lower Stillaguamish Mainstem with the aim of acquiring and designing floodplain/estuary restoration on 240 acres of high priority land adjacent to the Stillaguamish River. This project would implement the Action Agenda and the Puget Sound Chinook Recovery plan by making incremental progress towards the goals identified in both plans. This project would acquire fee simple interest in the property and develop final restoration designs and permits based on detailed site investigations and adjacent landowner outreach.
We propose to acquire 240+ acres of high priority land and 1.05 miles of shoreline adjacent to the Stillaguamish River, north of Hatt's slough and below Marine Drive. This project would acquire fee simple interest in the property and develop final restoration designs and permits based on detailed site investigations and adjacent landowner outreach. The eventual goal is to restore tidal wetlands to benefit fish and wildlife populations. Specifically, this project would benefit Puget Sound Chinook, chum, Coho, pink, steelhead, bull trout, and sea run cutthroat by increasing rearing area and prey resources (once the parcels are restored). There has been an 85% loss of the historic tidal wetlands once available to Stillaguamish salmon populations, making a lack of tidal rearing area one of six limiting factors in the basin. We are at less than 10% of historic Stillaguamish salmon numbers, and the 2005 Stillaguamish Chinook Recovery Plan calls for thousands of acres of tidal wetland restoration to meet recovery goals. This project would implement the Action Agenda by making incremental progress towards the habitat strategic initiative (and the floodplain and estuary regional priorities).
