DESCRIPTION
The Stillaguamish Tribe will expand and enhance native riparian forests in the Stillaguamish Basin along freshwater streams, including the North and South Forks and Mainstem Stillaguamish River. Project-related work will occur primarily in First and Second Riparian Priority sub-basins that support Chinook salmon as described in the Stillaguamish Watershed Chinook Salmon Recovery Plan. The overall goal is to establish diverse native species to promote long-term forest health and resilience. This riparian restoration project will benefit Chinook salmon, as well as coho, chum, pink, steelhead, rainbow, and cutthroat. The Riparian Crew will complete the following objectives: initiate weed control and riparian planting at multiple work sites; conduct stewardship activities to promote native plant establishment on previously planted acres; and install signs to inform visitors about project activities and purpose. The Riparian Crew consists of offenders from Monroe Corrections Complex who are supervised by a Corrections Officer and managed by the Tribal staff. The Crew has logged thousands of hours completing similar restoration projects led by the Tribe and other sponsors working in the basin on Tribal, private, and public lands in support of Chinook salmon recovery. This ongoing partnership provides a valuable resource in the long-term management of riparian forests in the Stillaguamish Basin.
