DESCRIPTION
This restoration project will improve in-stream and riparian habitat along a 1/2 mile of Jim Creek near Arlington, WA. Project activities include: 4 acres of weed control and riparian revegetation, livestock fencing, and design and construction of 3 large woody debris (LWD) structures and 150 feet of bank armoring removal. The project design was developed via SRFB grant 11-1410, but design modifications recommended by stakeholders increased construction costs significantly. This project is being re-submitted for re-assessment of the cost and project goals. Target species include South Fork (SF) Chinook, which are considered to be at the threshold of extinction (Shared Strategy 2007). Fine sediment from the Gold Basin and Trangen Meander slides severely limits the spawning success of Chinook along the SF (Purser et al, 2009). Jim Creek is one of two tributaries that provide spawning and rearing habitat refuges for SF Chinook. Habitat conditions on Jim Creek are sub-optimal. The riparian forest along the project reach is narrow, consisting of primarily red alder and other deciduous vegetation. The project reach is dominated by glide habitat lacking riffles and pools. Habitat for Chinook and other salmonids will be improved by constructing several mid-size LWD structures to increase complexity and diversity, and by riparian planting. Landowners have participated in the design, donated nearly $30,000 in resources, and will continue to be engaged in this project.
